Nereus – This fine art wave photograph was taken at sunrise along the rugged coastline of South New South Wales, Australia. After days of relentless autumn rain, a violent storm had stirred the ocean into a frenzy. Waking in the middle of the night, I drove for hours through heavy downpours, arriving just as the first light appeared. The rain stopped as I reached the coastline, but the storm still loomed over the horizon. As the sun broke through the thick cloud cover, it illuminated the crashing waves from within. Roaring giants rose and collapsed over the reef floor in a breathtaking display of nature’s force.
This image embodies the spirit of Nereus, the ancient Greek sea god known as the “Old Man of the Sea.” Said to possess the power to foretell the future and appear in many forms, Nereus reflected the ocean’s untamed and ever-changing nature – mysterious, unpredictable, and full of hidden force.
