Catherine Wheel – This fine art ocean photograph was captured at Bronte Beach, Sydney, Australia. That afternoon, I arrived at the beach and saw some nice waves rolling into the bay. They were relatively small, so I decided to swim out with my underwater flash – something I usually avoid when the swell is bigger.
While photographing the waves breaking over the reef, a rogue wave suddenly appeared. I duck-dived and pointed the camera toward it just as it crashed down on me. The powerful force created air rings in the water – a fleeting structure formed as the wave hit the surface and compressed the air into wheel-like shapes.
The impact pushed me onto the reef with crashing force. The power, the shape, and the violence of the moment reminded me of the Catherine Wheel – a brutal medieval device, and a fitting name for this intense underwater experience.
